How to bring an email back to the top of your Gmail inbox
An important email from Tuesday is now under forty newer ones. Here's how to put it back on top, either right now or at a time you choose, without creating a second copy.
Right now: snooze it for a moment
Snoozed emails return to the top of the inbox when their time comes. Snooze the email for the shortest time Gmail allows and it comes back on top shortly after.
- Open the email and click the clock icon (Snooze) in the toolbar.
- Choose Pick date & time and set a time a few minutes from now.
The email disappears into the Snoozed folder and comes back to the top at that time.
Later, and gone until then: Snooze
Same steps, with a real time: Tomorrow, Next week, or a date you pick. Good for things you truly want out of sight. The downside is that it's out of sight: if someone asks about it before then, you have to go find it in Snoozed.
Later, and visible until then: a scheduled reply to yourself
If you want the email to stay where it is today and still jump to the top at a set time, reply to yourself and schedule it:
- Open the email and click Reply.
- Remove everyone from To, Cc and Bcc, and put your own address in To. Check this twice: if you skip it, everyone on the thread gets your note.
- Write a line to yourself, like "Deal with this."
- Click the small arrow next to Send, choose Schedule send, and pick the time.
At that time Gmail delivers your note into the same conversation, and the whole thread jumps to the top of your inbox, unread. Until then it stays exactly where it was. Gmail allows up to 100 scheduled emails at once, and you can cancel any of them from the Scheduled folder.
What not to do: forward it to yourself
Forwarding puts a copy on top, but it starts a new conversation. Replies from the other people still go to the original thread, so you end up with two half-threads and the real one still buried.
Do it in one click insteadSurface Again adds an ↑ button to Gmail. Pick a time and the thread comes back to the top, unread, without being hidden first. Free for 10 a month.
